Environmental Awareness
EPA Smartway Partner – In partnership with the EPA, the Smartway Program is
working to reduce transportation-related emissions, protect our environment, reduce
fuel consumption, and improve our air quality for future generations.
Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) – Checker Logistics has installed APU’s on each of
its trucks.
Each year, domestic trucks consume more than 1 billion gallons of diesel without turning
a wheel. More specifically, the University of California-Davis estimates that the average
truck consumes 1,818 gallons of diesel fuel while idling. At $3.00 per gallon, this results
in over $6,000 of fuel costs, not to mention unnecessary emissions.
Recycle Oil Program – Checker Logistics maintenance shop has begun using a recycling
program for used oil. Recycling just two gallons of used oil can generate enough electricity
to run the average household for almost 24 hours.
High Volume / Low Speed (HVLS) Fans – While looking for energy efficient cooling and
heating options, we chose to use HVLS fans. HVLS fans move a lot of air due to their size
(up to 24-ft. in diameter), while moving at a low speed. The results are efficient heating
and cooling while utilizing less energy.
Hybrid Company Cars – In 2009, RGL Holdings purchased two Honda Hybrid
vehicles for local business travel. The vehicles save on gas and emissions helping
clear the air.
Lighting - Leicht Transfer & Storage has replaced bulbs in 3 of our warehouses with energy
efficient lighting. Although it appears innocuous, lighting causes air pollution. Each day, the
local power plant will commonly use coal, oil, and gas to generate electricity for our lighting
system as well as for other electrical needs. While burning these fossil fuels produces a readily
available supply of electricity, it also generates air pollution. In working with North American
Lighting we have decreased air pollution and environmental damage each year by the following
amounts: 1,442,154 pounds of Carbon Dioxide, 4,687,001 grams of Sulfur Dioxide, and
2,523,770 grams of Nitrogen Oxides. By removing these quantities of pollutants from the air,
our lighting will have the same affect on the environment as: planting 124 acres of trees, removing
252 cars from the road each year, and saving 87,340 gallons of gasoline each year.
